Chief John D. Murray served the people of the City of Oswego N.Y. for 37 years in the fire department. Sixteen of those years as Fire Chief. John started on the fire department in 1940 and rose steadily through the ranks attaining the rank of Fire Chief in 1961. He retired in 1977
as Chief John had a way with most of the men and was well appreciated. The City fathers listened and John headed one of the better departments in the state.
   In 1971Chief Murray became president of the New York State Chief's Assn. and served until 1972 .
   In 1994 the Fire Museum was started and named in honor of the retired Chief, thus the John D. Murray fire Museum was established.
