FIRE MUSEUM BECOMES REALITY !
In 1876 the City of Oswego saw that it miust change from many volunteer units to one paid fire department . In 1994 several of the firefighter's felt that there heritage was slipping away . A committee was formed and the dream of a fire museum was developed . Later a Board of Directors was formed , the men involved in this endeaver were Dick Ackerman , Tom Amedio , Hank Babcock , Bill Crego , Bob Clark , Dick Cummings , Tom Jones , Jack Saddington , David Thompson and Bruce Turner .
Then the real work began , everyone came up with ideas on what should be done. How , when , where and why after much thought things really began to roll. We had carpenter's , masons . workers and many more assets right in the fire department , many hands made light work and the same team work that prevaled at a fire , went into building a museum. Not only did the committee get going but Dan Teifke , Pat Pelkey , Greg Smith ,Spenny MacNamara , Jack Haynes , Jeff McCrobie and many others pitched in and before you knew it there was a building rising behind the east side fire station. It was up and running in no time at all. Thanks to a great group of people.
The Board of Directors put an add in the newspaper and all kinds of artifacts came pouring in . It was unbilieveable out of attics came, scrap books and collections , our past reappeared We have 3 firetrucks, a 1925 LaFrance , a1939 LaFrance and a 1952 Mack pumper. The Museum is bursting at the seams. the latest Board of Director's will have it's hands full trying to figure out what to do. Like the Marines the Fire Fighters learn to improvise and adapt. Come visit us and see what we have , every one is WELCOME . See you at the John D. Murray Fire Museum .
